Another 34 at Risk of Closure

Submitted by Parks & Trails New York, a statewide advocacy organization that works to expand, protect and promote a network of parks, trails and open spaces throughout our state for use and enjoyment by all.

At least 57 state parks and historic sites are targeted to close if Governor Paterson’s Executive Budget is enacted, according to a list released today. Twenty-two more parks will face severely reduced hours and services. A list released to the Legislature details another 34 state parks that will close if $5 million slated for park operations in the Environmental Protection Fund per the Governor’s 21-day Budget Amendments is not enacted.

“News of the closings will devastate many communities as their citizens rely on parks for affordable, close to home recreation and their businesses rely on parks to bring in revenue,” said Robin Dropkin, Executive Director of Parks & Trails New York, a statewide advocacy organization.

Mohawks to Lead $1.2 Million Shuttleworth Park Campaign

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

Submitted by Montgomery County Tourism Director Gina DaBiere-Gibbs

The Amsterdam Mohawks have found a home at Shuttleworth Park.  After
being part of renovations within the baseball facility since 2003 that
totaled over $500,000, the Mohawks are now spearheading a $1.2 million
Capital Campaign that will overhaul the entire rest of Shuttleworth
Park.

“Certainly the baseball stadium and the softball fields have come a long
way but over the years the rest of the park itself has become a little
outdated, overgrown with weeds and in need of some TLC.  While the
setting is gorgeous and the city tries to maintain it, there just aren’t
city monies to give the park the updates that it needs.  We are hoping
to do just that”, said Mohawks President Brian Spagnola, who is the
point person on the start of the project.

Looking at Lights in CanPal – Photos

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

canpallights 010Each year we like to take one night to go look at other peoples Christmas lights and decorations, and this year is no exception.

We loaded up the car, got the Christmas music playing, and pulled out our map of the Canajoharie-Palatine Bridge Chamber Decorating Contest contestants and headed out on our way.

It’s an old family tradition of mine, started by my parents, that we would drive around and give a rating of each house based on a 1-10 scale, so we were well prepped in judging for the contest.

We drove leisurely from house to house, including a lot that were not participating in the contest, but still had beautifully decorated homes.
