The Amsterdam Mohawks have announced the signing of their infielders for the 2010 season. The Tribe have signed five infielders to help them defend their 2009 NYCBL Championship In 2009, the Mohawks ended the season with a 36-12 record and were ranked 13th in the nation by PerfectGame Crosschecker.
Of the five infielders committed to the Mohawks, four are middle infielders. They include, TJ Jones, a sophomore second baseman from the University of Cincinnati, Brian Martutartus, a junior shortstop from Wagner College, Luis Penate, a junior shortstop from Division II Nova Southeastern of Florida, and Jon Schwind, a sophomore shortstop/center fielder from Marist College.
As a freshman last season, Jones played in 50 games and hit .326 as Cincinnati’s second baseman and #2 hitter in the lineup. Martutartus, who is Wagner’s shortstop, hit .366 with 18 stolen bases last year. Penate, a former draft pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates, transferred into Nova Southeastern this year from Central Florida Junior College where in 2009 he hit .378 with 12 homeruns. He is Nova’s cleanup hitter this spring. Schwind is expected to play both infield and outfield for Marist this spring. As a freshman in 2009, he started 57 games as the Red Fox’s leadoff hitter and hit .254 with 4 homeruns.
The other infielder signed by the Mohawks is third baseman Kyle Stilphen from the University of Maine. Stilphen started at the hot corner for the Black Bears as a freshman last season, starting in 32 games and batting .260 before an injury ended his season.
The Mohawks open defense of their title on June 5 at Shuttleworth Park against the Glens Falls Golden Eagles. The game will be followed by a spectacular Opening Night Fireworks Extravaganza which is sponsored by McDonalds.
