Amsterdam Urban Fishing

Chuchtanunda Creek, Amsterdam

Rainbow_TroutThe North Chuctanunda Creek in the City of Amsterdam has been stocked with rainbow trout. Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mukiss) have a pink streak along their sides with a white belly and small black spots on the fins and back. They are predators eating insects, crayfish and fish. One hundred rainbow trout were stocked in the creek.

The Montgomery County Water Quality Committee (MCWQC) has helped the city of Amsterdam obtain a stocking permit from the Department of Environmental Conservation. The committee purchased the trout and they were stocked in the North Chuctanunda Creek at Shuttleworth Park and above Maxwell Dam near the pedestrian bridge at the old Mohasco headquarters.

It is hoped that the stocking will encourage urban fishing and an appreciation of the North Chuctanunda Creek.

Mayor Thane has the stocking permit and can answer any questions about that. The committee has a web site at www.geocities.com/mcwccc/waterquality.
