In anticipation of increased visitation from school groups and bus tour companies in 2010, the Arkell Museum at Canajoharie seeks applicants for its volunteer tour guide program. Training will be held on Thursday afternoons, February 18 through March 25.
“We’re really hoping to hear from people who can be passionate about our exhibits and related programming,” said Andy Albertson, Curator of Education & Public Programs at the Arkell Museum. “But it’s critical to note that interested individuals do not need to have a background in art or history. We promise to provide them with the necessary skills and information to lead a great tour.”
Veteran tour guides come from all backgrounds. Some are retired teachers, while others own businesses. Most previously worked in consumer-oriented trades including public service.
As the first – and often only – point of contact for groups who visit the Arkell Museum, tour guides are a vital part of the institution’s volunteer program. “We’re especially interested in hearing from people who will serve as ambassadors for the Arkell for first-time visitors,” said Albertson. “So tour guides should be committed to making visitors feel comfortable while visiting the Arkell.”
Interested individuals should contact Albertson by e-mail at aalbertson@arkellmuseum.org or by telephone at 518-673-2314 x109 as soon as possible. Nominations for potential tour guides are also welcomed.
