The Amsterdam Mohawks signed two first baseman for the 2010 season. Kyle Koeneman of the defending National Champion LSU Tigers and Matt Conway of Wake Forest both have recently agreed to join the Mohawks in 2010.
First base was one of the more productive positions for the 2009 Champion Mohawks as Kentucky’s Braden Kapteyn and Manhattan’s Austin Sheffield batted third and fourth, respectively for the Mohawks. Koeneman and Conway both come with impressive offensive resumes of their own, however.
Koeneman, a junior transfer from Walters State Junior College in Tennessee, smashed an amazing 50 homeruns over the prior two seasons in junior college and hit over .370 in both of those seasons. He is expected to be the LSU’s starting first baseman this coming spring.
Conway, a Michigan native, is expected to start at first base for Wake Forest as a true freshman this coming spring as well. The 6’7 left hander is also expected to see time on the mound for the Demon Deacons. Matt competed in the International High School Power Hitting Showcase in at Tropicana Field in Tampa, FL last year and launched a mammoth upper deck homerun which is showcased on youtube.com.
The Mohawks won the NYCBL Championship in 2009 with a 36-12 record, winning 26 of their last 29 games along the way. Don’t forget fans, the Mohawks 2010 Hall of Fame Hot Stove Dinner is Saturday January 23rd. To purchase individual tickets or a table of 10, email gm@amsterdammohawks.com. This annual event will “stoke” the fire for all who will be anxiously awaiting the words-”pitchers and catchers”.
