Last night the Mike and Barb Russo celebrated the 90th Anniversary of Russo’s Grill, on West Main in Amsterdam, directly across the street from the Walter Elwood Museum’s new location.
The restaurant was standing room only, as the place was packed with family and long-time customers there to celebrate the long-standing tradition of Russo’s Grill. In the crowd you would also find Amsterdam Mayor Ann Thane, Montgomery County Board of Supervisors Chairman Vito “Butch” Greco and 3rd Ward Supervisor Ron Barone.
Mike and Barb had also put out a wonderful spread of signature dishes, including a variety of pizzas, vodka penne pasta and handmade chicken tenders.
Deb Ausplemeyer, President of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce was also in attendance, and the chamber had a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the 90 year history of the restaurant.
John Russo came to America, hoping to bring some of Italy with him. In 1920, he opened the Mohawk Grocery Store. He ran the market until Prohibition was repealed in 1933, when he converted the building into a bar and poolhall.
Later he would pass the business on to his sons, Vince, Babe, Louis and Pat.
Currently the restaurant is run by family member Mike Russo and his wife Barbara.
Mike ran Micheals on Route 30 until the opportunity for a new family member to take over Russo’s presented itself several years ago.
