Sunday afternoon, June 7 2009, 2:00 – 4:00pm
The Fort Plain Free Library will host a reading/discussion of Jhumpa Lahiri’s short story collection, Unaccustomed Earth. The discussion is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, June 7, from 2:00 – 4:00, at the library and will be facilitated by Maria Riccio Bryce. The stories featured in Unaccustomed Earth deal with the fates of two Bengali families in America and illustrate the puzzling forces that pull families apart and undermine marriages as well as the divide between immigrant parents and their American-raised children. A Publisher’s Weekly review claims that “Lahiri’s stories of exile, identity, disappointment and maturation evince a spare and subtle mastery that has few contemporary equals.”
Copies of the book are available for loan at the Fort Plain Free Library. The presentation is made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts in cooperation with the Mohawk Valley Library System and participating member libraries. For further information, please call the library at (518) 993-4646 during regular library hours.
