Textured Stories: The Works of Denise Allen

DeniseAllen_storeThis month, The Gallery of New York Folk Art is featuring an exhibit featuring the work of Denise Allen.

Denise is a folk artist and master craftswoman from Palatine Bridge, NY. She has been featured nationally and internationally for her one-of-a-kind textured artwork that predominately features themes of African-American colonial life and country living.

Ladies_and_spinstersHer art consists of prints, dolls and story cloths.

She has recently unveiled her latest piece, a 9-11 story cloth that will be housed at the 9-11 memorial in New York City.

The Gallery of New York Folk Art is located at 133 Jay Street in Schenectady, NY.

Galleries Opening Reception

You are invited to a reception for two American Art exhibitions, American Tonalism: Paintings of Poetry and Soul, and Picturing Women: American Artists’ Images of Women 1780’s-1940,developed from the remarkable Arkell Museum and Arkell Foundation Collections.

The evening reception includes music by the Musicians of Ma’alwyck, gallery talks, wine and hors d’oeuvres.

Open Exhibit – CCS Student Artwork

arkell_logo1The public is invited to an opening reception for a special exhibition of Canajoharie Central School District students’ artwork on Friday, February 5th 2010, from 5 to 7pm.

The exhibition featuring the work of elementary, middle and high school students will remain on display through March 28.

“Forming community/school connections is very important for art education,” said Canajoharie Middle School art teacher Michelle Egelston. “Having the opportunity to display student art work at the Arkell Museum and Canajoharie Library is so wonderful for my students and their families.”

Canajoharie High School art teacher Kathy VanLoan said her students are also looking forward to the show. “My students are thrilled at the prospect of having their work displayed at such a prestigious facility,” said VanLoan. (more…)

Kaleidoscope Festival 2009

paintbrushThe 14th Annual Kaleidoscope Festival will be held at the Fonda Fairgrounds in the Kane Entertainment Building and the Heritage Arts Building on Route 30A in Fonda, NY.

The festival is hosted by the Friends of the Visual & Perfoming Arts, a grassroots non-profit all-volunteer organization dedicated to increasing opportunities for youth and adults to appreciate, experience and participate in the arts in the Mohawk Valley of New York State.

Beech-Nut Family Day

Beech-Nut and the Arkell Museum will be hosting a family day.  Several collectors of Beech-Nut memorabilia will display their collections throughout the day in the Arkell Museum’ Great hall.  Museum visitors will have the opportunity to view artifacts up close and ask collectors questions about their collections.  Self guided tours of the museum’s permanent Beech Nut exhibit will be available.  Four walking tours of the factory grounds will be offered throughout the day by company employees.  Participants are invited to visit the museum’s classroom to color their own Beech Nut advertisement which will be assembled into a wearable pin.  The Beech Nut Gum Girl will be on hand passing out samples of Beechies gum.

This event is free to museum members and visitors residing in the following zip codes: 12166, 13317, 13339, 13410, 13428, and 13458.  For all others, regular museum admission of $7 for adults, $5 for students and senior citizens applies.
