Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Submitted by the Fort Plain Library. Do you have an event to share? Email us at events@mohawkvalleyguide.com

Wednesday, January 20th 2009 1-3pm

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Fulton and Montgomery Counties, in partnership with the Fort Plain Free Library, will offer its well-received energy saving workshop, Save Energy, Save Dollars, a free two-hour presentation exploring ways to reduce electricity and home heating bills through no-cost/low-cost means, on Wednesday, January 20, from 1:00 – 3:00, at the Fort Plain Free Library. By examining home heating, appliance use, lighting and hot water heating, participants will identify specific action plans that can work for them and save money.
Energy saving kits containing caulk, thermometers, plastic window insulation and more are distributed free to each participating household. The workshop focuses on low cost/no cost measures that homeowners and renters can take to start saving money and energy immediately. “Participants should come armed with lots of questions as the workshop aims to answer your questions about energy usage,” says Craig Clark, a Cooperative Extension community educator.
Save Energy, Save Dollars workshops are conducted by Cooperative Extension educators as part of the EmPower New York program with funding from NYSERDA.

Canal Street Pub – Photos

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Last Sunday, December 20th 2009, Alan and Lisa of the Canal Street Pub in Fort Plain held a party to show their appreciation towards their customers and employees.  So, of course, we had to stop by!

When I got there, the place was already packed, Nancy and Phil were playing on stage, and Alan and Lisa were making the rounds through the crowd. The pool table was set up with a great spread, from tuna salad pitas with roasted red peppers, ham and cheese, sausage bread, veggie bread, and shrimp cocktail.

I had a great time visiting with some good friends, good food, and good music.

If you haven’t stopped in yet, I strongly recommend you check them out. They are located at 9 Canal Street in Fort Plain. The food is made fresh daily, they have 8 beers on tap, and over 30 bottles to choose from. Each Thursday is a friendly in-house pool tournament, only $5 to play.

Click here for directions, hours and their menu.

The Power of Place

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Thursday, November 12th 2009

Submitted by The Fort Plain Free Library

1019964_a_writers_tools_2The Fort Plain Free Library will sponsor The Power of Place, a workshop conducted by published author Judy Prest on Thursday, November 12, from 1:00 – 3:00. Prest believes that the feelings one gets from a place can be very evocative. They can define how we see ourselves and the twists and turns of our lives. She will discuss, illustrate, and lead participants in writing exercises focusing on this power of place. The event is intended to renew interest in and gather submissions for the Fort Plain Free and Margaret Reaney Memorial Libraries Mohawk Valley Sampler project that is collecting pieces that spotlight an event, place, person, or moment that the author feels best illustrates their feeling about the central Mohawk Valley. The libraries will eventually publish a collection of reminiscences in the participants’ own words, in any format in which they have chosen to express themselves. Submissions may be essays, stories, poems, sketches, or even a musical interlude.
